It was a beautiful summer day in Duluth, MN and we just got back to our hotel room after a wonderful time visiting the aquarium, going for a boat ride and walking around the town. We had one more thing on our list before we went to sleep for the night – family swim time!

We went to the hotel pool and were having a wonderful time with the kids. As I watched, our two-year old stepped out of the pool and was being a good girl, just walking and all of a sudden she slipped and her head hit the cement! She let out a big scream and a second later, started vomiting. As I scooped her up my husband quickly ran for ice and to notify staff of what was going on.

Five minutes later, we left the pool and headed towards downtown. We had no idea where the nearest hospital was because we were visiting Duluth for the first time. The backseat of the care was in chaos. I was attending to my daughter who continued to scream between vomits, calming her brother who was very concerned about his little sister and looking up the nearest hospital under “Find a Doctor” on the Mayo Clinic Health Solutions app.  I decided to call the Ask Mayo Clinic 24/7 nurse line to get some needed advice!

Thank God I had the Ask Mayo Clinic phone number programmed into my phone! I called the number and spoke with a nurse in no time. The nurse was extremely helpful! First in calming me down and then going through a ton of questions to make sure my daughter was in no immediate danger. After going through her symptoms, we were in agreement that she needed to be seen and continued to the nearest in-network hospital, which we were able to locate by using the “Find a Doctor” tool.

Whew! After hours at the hospital, it appeared that everyone was going to be ok. We headed back to the hotel, slept through a horrible storm and woke up to no electricity in all of Duluth. While we all loved Duluth…we haven’t been back since these memorable events.

So what is the moral of my tale? Use Ask Mayo Clinic nurse line and put the phone number in your phone and the phone of your covered dependents! You’ll be glad you did.

This is a great idea!

My son has been with friends when he got very ill and they had to take him to the ED. Lesson learned with him, have him put our insurance card in his wallet.

Does this number work for MCHS?

Great question. It works for everyone covered under the Mayo Medical Plan. Thanks.

While I visited Duluth, MN and had a wonderful time, I am very glad your story ended on a good note after some stressful events. What great advice to put the Ask number into my cell phone. I just did it!! Being prepared is a great idea. And, you should visit Duluth again sometime and drive up the north shore (Route 61)!! Beautiful trip in the fall.

Awesome Cathy! Yes, I love having a nurse line wherever and whenever I need it. I hope you never have to use it, but it is always a peaceful thought knowing it is in your phone. 🙂 I'll definitely visit Duluth again. Thanks for the tip about Route 61. I'll be researching it.
Thanks for posting and have an amazing day.
