Can't comment about the changes as we are new to Waikiki, having been 2 times since 2016. I hear it has become more populated with tourists but we didn't mind. Still loved our stay there.
I'm interested to hear about the best of Waikiki or other favorite spots on Oahu. I've been to the islands many times, but only spent enough time on Oahu to visit Pearl Harbor.
If you like to snorkel or would like to try it, Hanauma Bay has the best snorkeling on Oahu. It's a nature preserve, lots of fish, relatively calm shallow waters with a white sand beach. Great for beginners or if you don't want to have to swim out very far to the reef.
