Let's see your mug shots!

Posted by Amanda Holloway @amandab, Jul 20, 2018

This morning, I decided to take a short walk to get a cup of coffee from a nearby coffee shop. I grabbed my trusty travel mug that I keep at my desk and headed out. On my way back, I noticed that most people in the hallways were also carrying coffee to-go but in disposable cups and it made me wonder why? Just think of the amount of waste that could be prevented by using a reusable travel mug. What are the barriers you encounter to using a reusable mug? What ideas do you have to help change the "throw-away" culture? And, if you use a reusable mug, post a picture here - I'd love to see your mug shots!

Note - this post was **not** brought to you by LL Bean. You can take the girl out of New England but you can't take New England out of the girl. 😉

Here is my mug, I really like it!
I think there are 2 ways to improve the situation with "throw-away" culture.
1. People should see that their friends drink coffee (or want ever they want) from travel mugs instead of disposable cups. I hope that people would follow the good example.
2. Everyone should find their perfect mug. When you find the mug that you want to drink from, you will always take it with you.

Amanda and tiwillti, I'm late to the thread but here is my new favorite mug. There should be a lot of these around this year as the mug has replaced the Argent Society banquet due to the pandemic.

That's a sharp looking travel mug. Congrats on your years of service to Mayo Clinic, @markwehde!

Great tip about the Kahler Starbucks! Bravo Espresso and Caribou also offer discounts if you bring your own mug. I recently read an article about how people make sustainable changes when they think their neighbors care about the environment. The more people see others with reusable mugs, the more it becomes socialized, encourages behavior change and eventually becomes the norm. I have a friendly challenge for those reading this - make it a habit to take your reusable mug to the coffee shop and then be sure to share how easy, convenient and even saved you a little money on your purchase. Let's make reusable the new norm. 🙂

With Covid are we allowed to bring in our own cups? Couldn’t bring our own bags to grocery store. I stopped at kwik trip. I’ll have to start asking.

Hi @kellyn, no unfortunately, due to Covid many coffee shops/stores aren't accepting the use of reusable travel mugs. I'm hopeful we'll be able to return to using travel mugs once we get beyond Covid. Same with reusable grocery bags - I hope we can return to using those again as well. Out of habit I still reach for my bags before going into the store. 🙂
