Repatriation insurance for J1 visa requirement?
Hi everyone, I will be starting at Mayo Clinic in MN as a research fellow/postdoc under a J-1 research scholar visa coming from Canada. The minimum health insurance that the US Department of State requires is as follows:
Medical Benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
Repatriation of Remains in the amount of $25,000
Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $50,000
A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
A policy underwritten by an insurance carrier with:
an A.M. Best rating of ‘‘A-’’ or above;
a McGraw Hill Financial/Standard & Poor’s Claims paying Ability rating of ‘‘A-’’ or above;
a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of ‘‘B+’’ or above;
a Fitch Ratings, Inc. rating of ‘‘A-’’ or above;
a Moody’s Investor Services rating of ‘‘A3’’ or above;
My position is eligible for the Mayo health insurance (Mayo Basic/Select/Premier, etc). Does the Mayo health insurance cover SOS/repatriation as a J-1 requirement, ie. do I need to buy separate J-1 exchange health insurance? I ask because a Canadian friend of mine who went elsewhere in the US for a research position had to buy repatriation insurance. I just don't want to be turned away at the border! Hoping to hear from someone in a similar situation, thanks in advance! 🙂

Mayo health insurance is enough for the requirement of J1 VISA, even the cheapest Mayo Basic insurance. You don't need to buy others.

1 ReactionIf you receive a job offer from Mayo (J1 or above) they will send you a brochure with the different health plans and their respective values. You can pay just for yourself or for you plus spouse or for you plus family.
I receive a job offer from Mayo as J1.But I haven't received health plans.I only received <Guidelines for Professional Visitors and Observers, Contractors, NonEmployees and Other Representatives> and <Code of Conduct>,is there any others?or is there a link to buy Mayo Basic insurance?
I would say to have a look through all emails that you received from Mayo and future manager/supervisor. I believe that you will find this information in one of the many emails we receive when getting the letter about the job offer. I am also on a J1 visa. The name of the brochure is ¨2021 Benefit Highlights. Residents, Fellows, Research Associates¨. This is for people that will be working full-time (40 hours) or more. I hope that helps
