Benefits advice when you're having a baby

Posted by Michael Callahan @michaelcallahan, Feb 17, 2021

Hi!
I'm a new employee, and I have to select benefits as a result. My wife and I are expecting another baby in May, so I have some definite upcoming medical expenses. Does anyone have any thoughts on the right medical plan to choose? Thanks for any advice you can give!

Good morning,
We have a 3-year old and I am due with our second in 2 weeks.
We have the Mayo Premier plan and we are extremely satisfied. All pre-natal appointments and blood draws have been covered so far. As far as the pediatrician is concerned, we have not paid a cent out of pocket for any pediatrician visits for my son, they even covered the nasal flu vaccine 100%.

I have a 2.5 year old and 8 year old, I have had the Premier plan since I started working here and would recommend it as well. Also consider using the Flexible Spending Account to supplement the deductible costs that you will accrue with the delivery and post-partum stay. Once your newborn has arrived you will have a new 30 day open enrollment period to add/change any benefits as well.
