How is/was your New Grad Nurse Orientation?

Hello everyone,

I am a new grad who accepted a job in the ICU. I am kind of nervous about starting in the position and am questioning if clinical has prepared me enough.

How was your experience in the new grad program been? How was orientation and was the length adequate enough to get you up to speed?

I was a new grad last October, hired into the PICU. My orientation was phenomenal. Hard work, though, for sure. Mine was about 3.5 months long. The residency program is more supplemental, and occurs more or less after orientation, with discussions about broader topics: teaching, coping, diversity, etc...once a month. Your orientation will include classes that will bring you up to speed on specific nursing pathophysiology for your unit, you'll take classes and tests, and you'll also have lots of time on the floor with patients. At first you'll follow your preceptor, and then more and more skills will be added, until you're taking patients on your own and your preceptors are overseeing your work. It's a good model. But- I do recommend figuring out some stress-relieving techniques now, and commit to them during orientation- it can be VERY stressful.
