Advice on living, moving, & everything in between!

Posted by Haley B @haleyb125, Oct 1, 2021

Hi everyone! I'm Haley and in Jan 2021 I'll be moving to Minnesota with my boyfriend & our perfect pup, Lucy! I'm a bit afraid of the cold since Texas rarely gets below 60, but I'm excited to start my new adventure in such a wonderful place. I can't WAIT to experience the lakes and scenery. I hear it's gorgeous up here! I have a few things on my mind & I'm hoping some of you guys can help me answer them?

- I need to contact the MN BON to test for licensure in the state. Is this an exaggerated, long process? People have definitely scared me into believing so lol. I graduate in December with my BSN, so I have some time. Any pointers in this realm would be appreciated! 🙂

-Tips on good location/reliable relators would be great! I obviously don't know much about the neighborhoods, food, grocery stores, etc. I also would like to weigh my options on renting/buying. What do you guys think?

These are some of the bigger things on my mind. I know any and all anxiety will go away once I figure some of these things out! Y'all are lifesavers and I appreciate any tips, pro tricks, or advice you may have!! Thanks y'all-- can't wait to meet everyone soon 🙂

**Some pics below because I may or may not already be homesick!

Coming from CA, I applied for my license in MN the day I found out I passed. They give you a 60 day temp license and you have to do a background check (and fingerprints). You also have to apply for license verification through your state. I did everything ASAP about six weeks ago and am still waiting on CA BRN to send my verification of license. It's def not a hard process but takes forever (but then again CA BRN is known to take forever!!!). I would just apply as soon as you find out you pass the NCLEX! Managers are typically very accommodating if theres any road bumps along the way

also be aware that the moving bonus they give you will be taxed at about 40% because its considered a bonus

Hey, congratulations!!! I am also from Texas and and just now moving to Minnesota. I would do what Lauren said and try to get everything in as soon as you can. But the nice thing is you can still get a temporary license. I wish Minnesota was a compact state. Feel free to reach out to me in here, or insta @ruheemmaredia

Thank you so much for the advice! I don't sit for my NCLEX until December, so I'm trying to decide if I should JUST test for MN licensure OR test for Texas and apply for a temp license there. Too many options :')

Definitely gonna get on that! I recently just finished onboarding, so figured I'd reach out to their BON Monday! Trying to figure out if I should take my NJE/Register for Pearson Vue before then? Thank you for your advice, Ruheem! It's nice to know I won't be the only Texan so far from home lol

Welcome to Minnesota! I can tell you that rental prices right now are higher than normal, and houses go quickly. If you find a home you like, you'll likely do better than trying to rent. For realtors - I have heard nothing but rave reviews on Shawn Buryska (shawnburyska.com). I have friends that have worked with him and had a great experience.

For Lucy, check out Central Bark, they do doggy daycare, grooming and have all sorts of fun stuff for her 🙂

And be ready for the cold!! I am from Texas as well, Houston - been here for 19 years, and I do ok in the winter. I don't love the cold - or the ice and snow but I can tell you that going through a long Minnesota winter, you really appreciate and get excited for our beautiful spring and summers! Oh - and there are some great food options here too! Some of my personal favorites are Crave, Victoria's and all of our awesome taco trucks!
