FL -> MN Insight

Posted by Sydney @sc3253, Dec 26, 2022

I recently accepted a position at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and would appreciate any insight. I am moving from Florida to Minnesota end of February/beginning of March, and I know I am in for a rude awakening when it comes to the weather. That being said, I am on the apartment hunt and would appreciate any recommendations on good places to live. I would like to add that I have never had the opportunity to drive in the snow, so living closer to the Mayo campuses is ideal. Any other insight/recommendations/pointers/advice/etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi Sydney,
Welcome to Minnesota! The cold and snow will be different, but coming in February/March will be good though as it only gets warmer from then on! As far as where to live, I'm looking to rent out my furnished condo. I will be moving to Minneapolis for school and looking for someone to live in my furnished newly remodeled condo. It is in a safe community about 5 min from St. Marys. Just one exit up on the highway and all major roads that get plowed quickly! Garage, Washer/dryer in unit, AC, dishwasher. No pets or smoking. $1200 base rent. It is also on private land with a small lake and wooded walking paths. Let me know if you want more information! 507-210-2875.

Hi Sydney! I am looking for a roommate for around that time and am looking to live at the Berkman Apartments for about a year! It's across the street from The Mayo Clinic. If you're interested or want more information just call or text! (913) 980-0196

Hi Sydney! Welcome to Mayo! Which campus are you working at - St Mary’s or downtown (eg Mayo building)? That might make a difference on where you’d choose to live. I moved from Hawaii at the end of March last year so I can relate to going from tropical to winter! That said, there are several apartment complexes that offer a shuttle from the complex to Mayo either downtown or St Mary’s or both. My shuttle includes SoRoc, The Boulders, Preserve, and Red44. The Pines have a shuttle. Quarry Ridge has a shuttle. A few others do as well. Around St Mary’s there’s some nice neighborhoods but I think you’d have to walk outside mostly if you’re too close for a shuttle. If you’re living and working downtown, several apartment buildings are attached to or very near entrances to the skyways or subways (underground walkways). Parking for most employees is off campus at park and ride or remote lots with shuttles to either campus. Many apartment complexes have underground heated garages and take care of snow removal but if you’re living in a privately owned house/apartment you’d want to ask about parking and snow removal. I’d also ask about heat - if it’s gas or electric and if you’re responsible for paying for it.

Other than that, take advantage of the after Christmas sales to get some winter gear. If you have any other questions, feel free to message me!
