Happy World Vegan Day!
It’s World Vegan Day! Did you know there is more to being vegan then just eliminating animal products from your food? Animal products find their way into all sorts of products people consume or use every day, and vegans have to be extra diligent to ensure the products they use don’t compromise their values and goals. Here is a list of just some of the product categories where animal products may be hiding!
- Cosmetics. Cosmetics often contain animal products for coloring (cochineal/carmine from crushed beetles and guanine from fish scales) and texture (lanolin from wool and squalene sometimes from shark livers).
- Electronics. Tablet, phone, and television screens can contain animal cholesterol, and gelatin is often used in the production of batteries.
- Plastic bags. To reduce friction and make them easy to grab, plastic bags are made with slipping agents derived from animal fats.
- Vitamins. Many vitamins contain gelatin to create the casing or as a filler.
What other products have you learned surprisingly contain animal-based ingredients? Let us know in the comments!
