In desperate need of before-school daycare...

Posted by Angie Dodoro @adodoro, Jul 2, 2018

My family is moving to Rochester from Detroit in mid-July. I start at Methodist on the 16th and my husband starts at St. Mary's on 8/13. We will both be in training on day shift (7-3:30). The SACC program doesn't allow drop off until 6:30, which means we would never be able to make it to work on time using the transit system. What does everyone else do? I'm on Care.com and have had a few applicants, but as soon as I say 6 am I don't hear from them again. I don't know what to do...

Im in the same boat. I start on the 16th in rochester as well and have had a hard time finding childcare as well. I have no idea what else to do. Ive tried care.com as well as visited several daycares in the area

Maybe call or check with HR at the facility you are going to and ask them if they have any suggestions, that’s what I would do. It can’t hurt to ask them, maybe they have had this same situation in the past. I’m not currently a Mayo employee, I’m starting Mayo in Jacksonville, FL on July 30, and I know HR at this campus has been very helpful with many questions and situations I’ve encountered as I’m sure they are at all campuses. Good luck to you.

@adodoro - In Rochester, Mayo Employees Back Up Child Care Center is a great option until you find regular care. They open at 6 a.m. I believe. Their phone number is 507-282-2707. I'm not sure if they'll have you on the eligibility file yet since you're not employees but they should be able to contact HR and see that you are starting. Also, once you are an employee, you can use FEI services to search for daycare options in the area that meet your needs. When you're on campus, go to HR Connect online and search "FEI" and you should find the child care referral online link. Also, it's worth looking into paying for a parking spot through one of the downtown businesses or ramps so you can maybe drop off a little later. Once we had kids we had to switch from the bus to a parking spot for the sake of children drop-off/pick-up. Good luck!

@kristinamwe Thank you for the all of this wonderful information. I just got into town today and have an interview with a nanny tomorrow afternoon. I'm hopeful, but good to know there are alternatives.

Thanks again!!!

@adodoro Welcome to Rochester and Mayo Clinic. At orientation on Monday morning at the DoubleTree Hotel, be sure to grab a Child and Adult Care guide off the resources table. That should give you some good leads as you figure out your before-school needs. I'm attaching a copy of the PDF here for you too.

Glad to have you here!
