SSDI and Mayo LTD - Medicare eligible under 65 - employee w/similar?
Hi, I developed a health issue a couple of years ago. I was on Mayo STD, then LTD, then approved for Social Security Disability. Now, I'm on Social Security Disability and Mayo LTD (reduced payment). I'm hoping with time and future surgeries I can return to work but have been told it will be at least another year or so.
Claims & Recovery sent me a letter recently stating I would be eligible for Medicare A & B soon and that I will need to sign up for A & B and pay for Part B so that Medicare will be the primay payor, and at that point, my Premier plan would then be changed to Mayo Medicare Supplement plan, and if I refuse Medicare A & B and continue my Premier plan instead, the letter statedd I "may incur out of pocket medical expenses that will not be covered" by my Premier plan.
I'm extremely anxious about all this. I've asked both Claims & Recovery and HR what do they mean by out of pocket medical expenses not being covered by keeping the Premier plan? The only answer I'm getting is they want Medicare to be primary and then have the Mayo Medicare supplement coordinate with Medicare. They advised I contact Medica to get an explanation on how the coordination would work and how I would be penalized for keeping my Premier Plan and not signing up for Medicare A and B. I contacted Medica and they stated they had no answers for me and routed me back to HR.
I've asked Claims & Recovery and HR if this means my coverage will be narrowed as opposed to what I've had for years on the Mayo Medical Premier plan and the answers are all the same "you'll have to ask Medicare what they cover." I'm getting no real answers which has heightened my anxiety because I have not a clue what I'm being thrown into.
The other issues that concern me are that Mayo only accepts a limited number of Medicare patients in each department. I've been getting my care at Mayo for years and I am established in a some departments, but what if down the road I have an issue and need to be seen in a new department? Will I be rejected if they have met their limit in that particular department because I will then be considered a "Medicare" patient? Once again, everyone I have spoken to in HR and Claims & Recovery state they do not have an answer for me.
I am extremely concerned about my future healthcare, especially as I am trying desperately to overcome my disability and return to work which will inevitably require more surgery and quite possibly have the need to see specialists in other department at Mayo to weigh in. I have a great track record at Mayo over the years--always great ePraisals, no corrective action, etc. Just feel very down about all this.
If anyone has Medicare A & B along with the Mayo Medicare Supplement, can you please let me know how you feel it compares to the coverage you had as a regular employee on Mayo Medical Plan, either Premier or Select? I would greatly appreciate it, as I'm not getting any satisfying answers from management.
