Get started learning! Here are a few tips and suggestions to make your learning more meaningful and effective.
Set the environment to learn.
- Find a quiet space with little to no distractions.
- Pick a time of day that energetically works for you. Some people learn better in the morning, others late at night.
- Decide how much time you will devote per session to maximize your energy and maintain focus.
- Take a quick break from your self-study at least every hour. Get up and walk around for even 5-10 minutes to help you re-focus.
Be creative and reflective.
- Keep a learning journal and make note of what you are learning and how you will apply it.
- Test your learning within 24 hours for best retention. For example, if you are learning a new communication strategy, try it out with someone you know.
- Refer back to your learning plan to check progress against the goals you set.
- Build a support structure for your learning. Partner with another person to share learnings via text, phone or e-mail. Join the Workforce Learning Community on #WeAreMayoClinic.
- Celebrate your accomplishments! Remember you are staying engaged and connected to Mayo Clinic during this time and will be ready to return to work with new knowledge and skills.
