Pre-Application
- Review Mayo Clinic’s SkillBridge internship opportunities available. Details found in the “Direct Patient Care” and “Admin & Support Services” tabs.
- Determine which internship role(s) you are interested in. Ensure you meet the requirements for the internship role you wish to apply for.
- Consult with your local Transition or Education Office for SkillBridge application/enrollment guidance.
- Obtain verbal approval from your military chain of command to participate in the SkillBridge program.
- Update your resume to reflect how your education, skills and experiences aligns with the internship role you are interested in. You will need to include this with your internship application. Check out our resume writing resource.

Application and Selection Process
"Members must be within 180 days of their scheduled separation date from service to qualify".
- Submit the online application form at least 60 days before the requested start date of the internship. Some internships may have a specific application timeframe. Please follow the directions as stated under “Direct Patient Care” or “Admin & Support Services” tabs. (Be prepared to attach your resume to your application.)
- Mayo Clinic HR staff review applications and notifies the department hosting the intern of any qualified applicants.
- Hosting department contacts the applicant to schedule an interview.
- Selected applicants are interviewed.
- Applicants are notified of decision.
- Applicants offered an internship are provided directions on next steps, including the requirement to obtain written approval from their Unit Commander prior to the scheduled start date. The appropriate SkillBridge approval form must be completed and on file to initiate the preboarding process.
Pre-boarding and Onboarding Steps
*Preboarding can take up to 30+ days.
- Signed acceptance letter and SkillBridge Approval Form on file.
- Background check completed.
- Immunizations records and TB test from intern on file.
- Intern's ID assigned in Mayo Clinic's system.
- Appropriate hosting department system access completed for internship.
- Welcome orientation packet from hosting supervisor emailed to intern. Any hyperlinks in the welcome packet will not be accessible until your first day.
End of Internship
- SkillBridge interns will complete a feedback survey at the end of their internship experience.
- Internship supervisor has career conversation with intern.
- Intern identifies open positions available that connects to their internship experience and applies for the position. Open position could be within the work unit the intern completed their internship or in another work unit with an open position that connects to their education, skills, and experiences.
