Happy America Recycles Day! What's your recycling wish list?

Posted by Amanda Holloway @amandab, Nov 15, 2017

Did you know that November 15th is America Recycles Day? Did you also know that according to the EPA, on average, Americans each produce 4.4 pounds of waste per day? In 2014, Americans recycled 34.6% of that waste. That’s pretty good but could be better. At Mayo Clinic, we’re continually seeking ways to reduce the waste stream and recycle where possible. What strategies do you use to reduce and recycle waste? Are there materials you wish could be recycled at home or work?

Reusable takeout boxes/containers should be an option in our cafeterias.

Getting rid of Styrofoam in the cafeterias would be a create place to start. A small discount on fountain beverages, coffee and water if you bring your own refillable cup, like they do at convenience stores/ gas stations would be nice as well. At home, besides the standard recycling I also have a compost pile for food waste.

Remove all labels from any prescription bottles so that they are clean of any sticker remains and then take the bottles to the zoos or animal hospitals for them to re-use for whatever purpose.
