New to area-looking for childcare

Posted by Angie Dodoro @adodoro, Jun 8, 2018

Hello all! Not sure this is the right forum for this question, but figured I'd give it a try. We will be moving to Rochester at the end of July. We will need full-time daycare for our two kids (9 and 11) until school starts. Then we will need before and after school care. Schedule will vary greatly! SACC would work most of the time for my youngest, but not sure what to do with the 11-year-old. She's not stayed on her own before, not sure she is ready. Any suggestions?

Hello @adodoro It looks the the YMCA In Rochester has a few great Summer Programs that would fit for you 11 year old and there are different ones to choose from. I have an 11 year old also and having her in a summer program where she can be with kids her age and being active is really good for her and she enjoys it. I definitely don't want her sitting on the couch all day watching TV or playing games on her tablet. https://www.ymcamn.org/child_care__preschool/summer_programs/rochester

We live in Mankato and through our local Community Education and Recreation department my 11 year old took a Home Alone Safety course so she would feel comfortable staying home for a while on her own and how to make some healthy snacks that don't involve using the stove/oven. I am sure Rochester has something similar too.

Highly suggest Rochester’s summer of service program through community education. Kids spend two weeks doing community service - working with seniors, food banks, animal shelters, etc my 14 year old has done it for three years and loves it... I’m not sure the required grade... but something to check out.
