New to Rochester

Posted by sarahmccall @sarahmccall, Nov 25, 2019

Hi!
I will be moving to Rochester from Phoenix, AZ in March as an RN at Methodist. I'm looking for advice on where the best places to live are, and how to live life in the cold. Any information is appreciated, thanks!

Hello!

Welcome to Minnesota! I live on the NW side of town which is pretty nice. As far as I can tell, most areas in Rochester are pretty safe. As for surviving the cold, lots of layers, get an emergency pack for your car battery, and make/eat some hearty chili :-D. Welcome aboard!

Congratulations on your new job! I never had seen snow in my life until I landed in Minnesota. Its not too bad at all. Rochester on the whole is safe. Get thermal wear, a winter jacket that will keep you warm and a nice winter hat. Its not too bad about 3 months of winter out of which only 2 months may be extreme. The rest of the temperatures are mostly between 10-20 which is not too bad. All the best!

Hi! I went to ASU, loved the Arizona weather! I am looking for a housemate and am happy to share cold weather advice.

Welcome, the cheapest apartments and houses will be on the SE side of Rochester however that is also the least safe area of town. Anything you find on the North end of town will be safer. An emergency pack for your car and a good winter coat should do the job nicely!

Hi, I also work at Methodist and have loved living at Grandeville at Cascade lake. There is a shuttle right next door (easy walk) that goes back and forth to the hospital which is extremely convenient! Let me know if you have any questions.
