Considering a position at Mayo- good area for a younger person?

Posted by edool90 @edool90, Feb 28, 2020

Hi! I am a 21 year old considering a position at the Mayo Clinic. I am originally from MD but go to school in SC. Is the Rochester Area good for a young person? I know it is a smaller city but I was wondering what types of activities are available? Thanks!

If the position pays good and is beneficial for your future career then I would consider, otherwise not. Rochester is full of old and sick people thanks for the clinic. If I would be in your age I must think Rochester would be quite boring. 21 year old me was living in South Germany, drinking good beer and traveling, learning different languages and cultures. Also in Rochester housing costs are high, if you are looking for the place near the clinic.

What is it you are looking for? Your 21-year old self might not be looking for the same things as your first reply. For example, from what I've investigated, it seems like a good place for those who like physical activity. I just moved in yesterday and start on Monday, so I have limited knowledge of the area. I just Googled 'life in Rochester MN' and got a variety of results, though. Without knowing what you're looking for, others who reply might think only from their own worldview. This link might help:

Trout fishing nearby is world class. Bike trails, parks, live theatre, night clubs all in town. Nice assortment of shopping and dining throughout town. Rochester often voted a best city to live in America. Only opinions but need to check into this for what things you like 🙂

it depends on what you like to do. Rochester, from what I understand, is great for families. It is harder for people that are single or DINKS (double income no kids). I will say that the winters here are BRUTAL, especially if you are coming from South Carolina, so be mindful of that. If you do like doing winter related actives, I think you will be ok. But I will say that penetrating the Rochester social scene is....hard. I have tried in multiple venues to try and meet new people with no luck. we are also pretty close (maybe an hour and 20) to the twin cities, that has alot more to offer in terms of concerts, restaurants, and overall culture.

As a young person who moved to Rochester a year and a half ago, I can say I enjoy it! I have made a lot of friends here. It is definitely not as busy as a large city, but it has quite a bit to offer! Find some roommates to live with and go adventure with them! There is plenty of stuff to do during the week and on weekends in Rochester to keep you occupied. I enjoy vising bars/restaurants, going for outdoor runs/walks/biking, attending Thursday's downtown in the summer, and more. But remember it is all about what you enjoy doing in your free time!!

Hey! 26 year old new grad nurse here, and I’m moving to Rochester for a position. I’m from LA, and currently live in Saint Paul - Rochester is quieter than the cities but they’re only an hour away. Hope to meet you someday! -Peyton

Mayo Clinic also has campuses in Arizona and Florida. I work at the one in Jacksonville, Fl and the campus is located 5 minutes from the beach. Outdoor activities are abundant and the nightlife at the beach is definitely a younger crowd, also Florida has no state income tax so the pay might not be as much, but it is offset by taxes and cost of living, which is pretty low here comparable to other places I’ve lived. I hope this helps you.
