Looking for a room/place for rent

Posted by passionates27 @passionates27, May 21, 2020

Hello, I moved here from MD a month ago and will be working at Mayo clinic downtown and St. Mary's campus June 1st. I've been looking for a place but with no luck, does anyone have any recommendations? I would prefer my own space since I have my stuff from home but open to renting a decent sized room for a reasonable price.

Thank you

Hi there, I see an ad below yours entitled "$420 Bedroom Available in 4BR Townhome with Healthcare Professionals." The room looks quite small, but it is empty of stuff. There is no reasonably-priced housing in Rochester, MN. The housing market there represents a massive greed-orgy by all landlords, completely unfettered by any governmental regulation. You may do better in some outlying community, but will then have to commute to work. In some outlying communities, there is bus service to Rochester for commuters. That gives you the advantage of not having to deal with parking. Good luck, best wishes for your career at Mayo.

Also, take a look at the ad below yours entitled "3 Rooms Available - Minutes between Downtown & St Mary." Best wishes to you!

I agree with @heartfelt01 -- there is no reasonably priced housing in Rochester, even renting a room can be outrageously priced sometimes. The closer you are to downtown, generally, the more expensive it gets. Not sure what your price range is, but I currently live at Timberland Heights in NW Rochester in a 1 bedroom and really enjoy it here. Expect to pay around $1K a month here though for a 1 bed by the time your utilities are included (Our rent is $877, plus water/sewer/admin fees, plus $55 in internet, a $15/month pet rent, and $50-80 in electricity (also your heat/AC)) . They're very prompt to follow up maintenance requests, which I appreciate since I haven't had that from any other landlord.

I've heard The Gates is still pretty sketchy, so I wouldn't recommend living there.

Thanks so much for your advice, I've been in an Airbnb for a month now, still searching for a place to live. The reason I'm a little skeptical about looking on the outskirts of Rochester is because I will be taking overnight calls in the hospital and just worried driving on country roads at night or in snow. I saw a place in hayfield but I'm worried I might be isolating myself from being able to visit social places in the city or close to stores lol.

Yeah, I'm starting to get that feeling things are more expensive closer to downtown. I thought things were expensive from the big city I'm from but it's a bit ridiculous here. Thanks for your advice, will definitely keep these in mind. I would consider a roommate situation but my hours vary and I kind of like my own space to spread out too

I see.. Yeah that's the one thing with living outside of town, if you work off shifts then you have to drive in, because the commuter buses really only run for day shift. And right now, last I heard, the commuter buses aren't running due to COVID. Within town, they do have limited bus routes running around town, including most park and rides I believe. There is a bus stop about 2 blocks down from my apartment here at Timberland that I used to take in every day before I started teleworking due to COVID. Otherwise Shopko and IBM park and rides aren't that far from here either (a couple miles, I believe).

Best of luck!

Restaurant recommendation: If you want really good Vietnamese food, I highly recommend Pho Tai, it's on 37th ST NW in Rochester.

Love vietnamese food, thanks for the recommendation. What is the sound quality inside and outside Timberland heights?

I never hear my next door neighbors. I will sometimes hear the pitter-patter of my upstairs neighbor's kids if they run in the apartment, but that's only occasionally. The one thing I will say is that Timberland isn't too far from the fire station, so now that I'm home I will say that I realize the fire trucks go by a few days a week during the day. I've never heard them at night (maybe they don't use sirens at night?) I have been sleeping with ear plugs since college, so it's just habit to me to wear them. I don't wear them because the building is loud; it just feels weird to not have them when I'm sleeping.
