Any Musicians Out There?

Posted by @bobbydavis, Mon, Sep 25 12:25pm

I’d love to know who all the musicians are out there. Please share what instrument(s) you play (or if you’re a singer, electronic musician, etc.), whether you do any home recording, perform live, what style(s) music you play, etc. Whatever you’re comfortable sharing. From total beginners to gigging pros, it would be great to know what kind of talent we have out there.

I’ll go first, since I kicked-off the topic:

– Guitar (7-string)
– Primarily Metal and Progressive Metal (ironically, I love EDM too)
– I author a blog, where I post bi-weekly articles on guitar topics
– I used to perform live, but not any longer
– I have a home recording studio
– I occasionally (but rarely) still give guitar lessons

Okay, your turn!

Nice to meet you, @bobbydavis! My passion is singing. I was in choir in college and that experience provided me with an abundance of special memories, including a tour to 8 countries in Europe! I only sing in the church choir now, but I’m happy I still have an outlet for it. I play the piano a bit, and was a tenor saxophone player in school. My piano tends to just gather dust now, although I usually play so I can sing.

I am proud to say that my two boys are showing interest in music. I look forward to seeing what they do with it in the future and what opportunities it may provide as they participate in school and maybe beyond.

This coming week i will be going to the Inaugural Dubstep Festival, “LOST LANDS”…..Jeff Abel aka EXCISION, will be holding this massive festival in OHIO! I leave this coming Thursday! If you are ever interested in any EDM shows let me know and i can get you in touch with people in the scene here in Rochester as well as up in the cities.

@bobbydavis Fantastic! Its great to see other musicians out there! I have not been an active musician for about three years now. I ran PR for a Heavy Metal band for a few years. They were about to get a record deal which would have put me out of a job, but broke up before everything went through. I played Trombone in a garage ska band for a stint and I also had a paying gig for a Polka/Big Band. I am most proficient at Trombone but have intermediate skills on drums, various percussion, guitar, keyboard, and trumpet. As you can tell, I’ve got a wide musical taste which spans decades, genres and the globe. My currently flavor this week has been Korean hip hop, Bollywood hits, and pretty much anything off from Napalm Records.

I know there are a number of Mayo employees that perform with the Choral Arts Ensemble (I sing in the alto section) and we have a concert coming up this weekend, 10/21! I mostly play violin and sing with various groups. I also play bodhran, bouzouki, mandolin, and assorted other instruments, when it’s convenient. My two godkids just started music lessons and they both chose the second largest instrument in their respective instrument family (Euphonium and Cello)! I started playing classical violin 20 years ago, but I’ve been mostly doing Irish music for the last 15 or so years and two years ago, I started playing with an Elizabethan group in the Twin Cities!

No musical talent on my end. However I grew up listening to my brother play guitar on the front step and we would all sing along with him. His band would practice at our house and it was so fun. My nephew is pursuing a music career in New York city. So proud of him for taking the chance and moving from this area.

Hi. My name is Renee. I work in the specialty building, in the lab, in Phoenix. I was in high school band. Played clarinet, bass clarinet, and tenor sax. Now I’m learning bass guitar. Can play a song or two.

Hi @renee29404! I played the tenor sax in high school as well. I was just telling my kids how fun it was to march in parades, be in pep band, jazz band, etc. Not sure if you are a baseball fan, but I was proud yesterday when I saw a gentleman play the National Anthem on his tenor saxophone at the Yankees/Astros game. Very well done!

Hey man, nice post! We actually have a lot in common.
– I play guitar, I have a regular 6 string Ibanez electric guitar, also I play bass and classical acoustic guitar
– Primarily I’m heavily into metal, but also ironically I like EDM as well! (check out Deep Space House on YouTube)
– I used to play live in a metal band on a regular basis for a few years, but haven’t played live in the last couple years
– I have a home recording studio setup similar to yours too, and a side project I’ve been doing from home for a few years (sceadugengan.bandcamp.com)

Nice studio! That’s almost exactly how I had things set up before I got the studio desk and wide monitor. Are you using Reaper as your DAW?

Yep!! I’m sure you’re familiar with it… it’s been a great DAW for my budget home studio 😀

Reaper’s what I use as well. Been using it for a few years now and can’t really imagine why I’d need to move to anything else.

Same here. I feel like if you take the time to figure it out, you can do almost anything you want with Reaper.
