I moved from Alaska to Jacksonville in January and don't know many people here. I do not have a family of my own, but I'm originally from Georgia so I do have family somewhat close by at least. I need to make some friends locally though. Any other Jax newbies out there?

Hi Treasure, are you in Jax? I love the outdoors and would love to get into kayaking here. I have a road bike, but have not been happy about places to ride it yet. I'm thinking a mountain or fat-tire bike for the beach would be a better idea. I SCUBA dive and could use a buddy down here. I also love live theatre, music, and dance.
I am not, but I know some colleagues down there. I am in Rochester. I will tag some of those I know to see if they have any suggestions for you, or are interested in the same things. @erinduncan @gretlcain
Have you noticed the music discussion group – https://connect.employees.mayo.edu/group/music/? There are people from across the organization that have shared some venues and interest in music there, although it looks like a lot are from Arizona. Check it out, maybe even start a post there for potential spots that have live music that you could meet people at. 🙂
Enjoy your new adventure. You have made quite a switch from Alaska to Florida!

welcome to Jax @intrepidfrog! I am a native jacksovillian and hope you enjoy your time here 🙂 I have always wanted to visit Alaska; in fact my mother is taking a cruise there this summer. what campus will you be joining in Jacksonville? If you need like nature trails UNF has beautiful scenery and it's free to park there on the weekends. There is also Ft. Caroline which has two different "locations" you can walk. I suggest a cruiser if you want to bike on the beach. If you love live theater and dance, keep and eye out for FSCJ's performances, sometimes they are free to the general public and they are pretty great in my opinion. Their choir's most recent performance was Schubert's Mass in G, which was a free concert.

Personally, I'd recommend checking out http://www.meetup.com to see what groups are available in Jacksonville to meet new people or find people with shared interests. Also, There are a couple of kayak launch areas that are popular (Nocatee and Amelia Island). Welcome to Jacksonville!

There is a Mayo Clinic Bike Team that does group rides on Saturday mornings. The training prepares you well for the MS150, a (road) bike ride to Daytona. Sarah Knowles it the Mayo Clinic Bike MS Team Captain and can add you to the DL if you're interested. Welcome to Jacksonville!

So glad you signed up and have been riding with them! One of the MERG groups in Florida Mayo Clinic may also be something to consider as a way to get involved with areas of interest. I'm happy to meet for coffee sometime on campus at the cafeteria to catch up and share resources. Feel free to email me duncan.erin@mayo.edu if that is something that interests you!

Thanks for posting, @intrepidfrog! Can I assume that since you came from Alaska you are also new to Mayo? If so, welcome!
What are your interests? That may connect you with some people you'd enjoy spending time with and getting to know.
