What restaurants do I need to know about?

Posted by Sandra Burrowes @sandraburrowes, Mar 1, 2017

I seldom get out for lunch but when I do, I get tired of going to the same three restaurants over and over. Are there any restaurants walkable from the downtown campus (I'm in the Centerplace/USBank building) that don't get the love they deserve or I may not have heard about? I don't live in Rochester, so I don't know all the foodie haunts.

If you like hot sandwiches, try out Tinn's. I go there whenever I can and get the same thing every time - the Chicken Cordon Bleu (I hold the honey mustard). They chop and prepare the sandwiches on a grill right before your eyes. Their fresh cut fries are really delicious too! There is one in downtown Rochester at the little food court across from Newt's Express. For those that work at the St. Mary's campus, there is one across the street as well.

Thanks, Treasure. I don't know Tinn's, though I know where Newt's Express is. I'll check them out.

Anyone have other recommendations?

Have you tried CB3 (Crossings Bistro & Bar) on W Center & 4th Ave NW? They have great burgers, sandwiches, soup and salads. The last time I was there, they offered a discount to Mayo employees so wear your badge.

That's a great idea, Brenda. I moved across campus and kind of forgot about that little restaurant. They've had a few wonderful upgrades in the last couple years (fireplace! social area!) and they added a menu with some terrific-looking selections. Thanks for the reminder--I need to go back.

The Porch (The historic train depot) has the best fried chicken in town.

Thanks for the great new referral, @klausoun. Just checked it out and the menu looks great. It's a half mile walk from my building, which is perfect for summer and just in case I eat any of that tasty fried chicken.

I'm a huge fan of Asian food. Mango Tai is one of my favorites which is downtown. Pho Tai has great pho soup and spring rolls and Ichi Tokyo for great sushi. All of them have a very diverse menu with something for everyone. Getting hungry just thinking about it. 🙂

Hey Sandra, what are the 'same three' you go to now? They might not be in my rotation. But I don't want to suggest something you are tired of.

ZZest fans??? FYI - the café (south of Apache Mall) is closing in September. We went last night with vegetarian friends... ordered terrific cauliflower, avocado toast, mushroom pizza.. Hurry if you want to experience them before they close 🙁

Order zPizza (downtown Rochester) a few nights ago - it was TERRIFIC. Many tasty choices - we did 1/2 Provence (vegetarian) and 1/2 Mexican (chicken plus). They deliver for $3, but have a $25 minimum (thus, an order of parmesan breadsticks!) We joined their loyalty club on their web site (promises good deals - we'll see!).
