What restaurants do I need to know about?

Posted by Sandra Burrowes @sandraburrowes, Mar 1, 2017

I seldom get out for lunch but when I do, I get tired of going to the same three restaurants over and over. Are there any restaurants walkable from the downtown campus (I'm in the Centerplace/USBank building) that don't get the love they deserve or I may not have heard about? I don't live in Rochester, so I don't know all the foodie haunts.

That's a great idea, Brenda. I moved across campus and kind of forgot about that little restaurant. They've had a few wonderful upgrades in the last couple years (fireplace! social area!) and they added a menu with some terrific-looking selections. Thanks for the reminder--I need to go back.

Have you been to Pasquale's Neighborhood Pizza? They have a great lunch special for $5.00! And ask for Pasquale. He's the owner, of course, and one of the nicest, most generous guys in town!

If you like hot sandwiches, try out Tinn's. I go there whenever I can and get the same thing every time - the Chicken Cordon Bleu (I hold the honey mustard). They chop and prepare the sandwiches on a grill right before your eyes. Their fresh cut fries are really delicious too! There is one in downtown Rochester at the little food court across from Newt's Express. For those that work at the St. Mary's campus, there is one across the street as well.

I just noticed a couple of weeks ago that the downtown location closed. So bummed! Guess I have to find a new favorite place for lunch.

City Market, right downstairs from the original Newt's, has the very best sandwiches and salads in town. Usually very busy during the lunch hour, but they are fairly quick, and well worth the wait! I get the #20, turkey ranch sandwich!

We tried the brand new Damsy restaurant - Middle Eastern/Mediterranean. We had Schwarma sandwiches, one chicken and one beef, and they each came with very fresh side salads. The food was fresh and very delicious. I think the place will do quite well here in Rochester.

Where is Damsy? Is it walking distance from the Mayo campus?

Damsy is at 4th Street and 1st Avenue. It's an old gas station that was last a Chinese restaurant.

Thanks for the reminder @mrk5161! I haven't been there for quite a while, and I loved their turkey/cranberry sandwich.

Thanks, Treasure. I don't know Tinn's, though I know where Newt's Express is. I'll check them out.

Anyone have other recommendations?

Have you been to Tonic? It's across from Saint Mary's. It is very different than most lunch places. You can get some awesome potato pancakes and borscht!
