Well-being with a Purpose: Meet Tanis (Team Cancer)

Posted by Alayna Osborne @alaynaosborne, Jul 22, 2019

After years of frequent treatment, Tanis’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma had been kept in remission. But when the cancer returned again, Tanis came to Mayo Clinic to receive a new treatment, known as CAR-T cell therapy. Using her own individualized cells to fight the cancer Tanis now has a future without cancer. Read Tanis' story here: https://mayocl.in/2J8RbRe

Many family members and friends are survivors, some victims to this awful disease. I am Team Tanis - hoping to help make a difference by raising money for cancer research by exercising. This is just the motivation I need right now.

I have chosen Team Tanis for this well-being with a purpose challenge. Like so many others, several of my family members are actively receiving treatment or are in remission; as well, friends are experiencing the force of cancer on their lives. The extra motivation for me to complete small yet meaningful goals serves the purpose of improving my own life and hopefully contributing to the improvement of others' lives.

I have lost too many friends and family to cancer. I am participating in memory of all of them and in honor of all those who have beat the battle!

I have chosen Team Tanis for my wellness challenge for many reasons. First I have had numerous friends and family who have struggled with a cancer diagnosis. But also because I now work in the cellular therapy laboratory where we handle these precious cell products and I know how important they are for treatment when all other treatments have failed. CAR-T cells are just the beginning of how cellular therapies can help save lives, and I want to support the research to improve upon our existing knowledge.

I joined team Tanis because I have worked in cancer research and have had many experiences with friends and family having cancer.

I chose Team Tanis for the Well-Being with a Purpose challenge. The reason I chose this team is because I work in research and know this is a need. I not only have friends that have fought through NHL but see patients that need us to find what will work for them. What a great way to challenge myself and co-workers to make a difference. We all benefit by participating in wellness activities that will have positive long term effects for us all. Pass it on!

How has everyone else changed their exercise habits? I have made it a habit to try to avoid sitting as long as possible at night. I have been cleaning and organizing. I also get a walk in at lunch and try to get more exercise in in the evening when I get home. I have added at least 3 days of strength training to my normal routine as well.

I love how you have turned your challenge into something not just exercise-related, but productivity related as you increase your activity. This is a good tip for me as I haven't been as good as I'd hoped in changing my habits. This starts today. 🙂

Thanks. No better day to start than today! 🙂
I take things one small change at a time. The small changes the last week or two have just entailed large projects.

Have you looked into Marie Kondo's organization tips? She had a netflix show, I didn't watch it but followed many of her guidelines and cleaned out the whole house this summer. I used some of her checklists I found on pinterest to keep me motivated to not stop after a few areas/rooms.
